Name Change Announcement for Housing Equality Center of PA
The Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania
The Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania is America’s oldest fair housing council. The nonprofit organization offers a variety of programs and services to the general public to ensure that consumers have access to housing and understand their rights under fair housing laws.
The Housing Equality Center was formerly known as the Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia. In 2014, the organization rebranded and changed its name. It was vital to explain the organization’s name change to the public, but with so many other pressing responsibilities, Executive Director Jim Berry didn’t have time to write an announcement himself.
With just a few days’ notice, Skidmutro jumped in to ghostwrite the announcement. We started by researching effective ways to communicate a name change, to be sure the announcement struck a positive tone with recipients and contained practical details, such as the organization’s new contact information. Next, we wrote a succinct and engaging announcement in the Housing Equality Center’s brand voice.
Message from the Executive Director: New Name, Same Mission
I am proud to announce that we have changed our name from the Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia to the Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania. The name change recognizes the expansion of our organization’s geographic reach beyond Philadelphia. Our more inclusive name will better enable us to connect with consumers and housing professionals throughout our expanded service area, which includes the Pennsylvania Counties of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia.
Our new name also recognizes our growth beyond fighting racial discrimination. Today’s efforts extend to combating all types of housing discrimination, including discrimination against people with disabilities, families with children, senior citizens, refugees and immigrants.
And let’s face it, the Housing Equality Center is easier to say and understand! It succinctly captures our mission, which remains to lead the effort to eliminate housing discrimination through education, advocacy and enforcement of fair housing laws.
With our new name also comes a bold new look and a state-of-the-art, mobile-friendly website, equalhousing.org. The new website is easier to use and brimming with fresh, useful content. I invite you to take a few moments to look around! While you’re at it, be sure to join our email newsletter to keep abreast of the latest news, events and professional training opportunities.
Our staff remains unchanged and our old website address and email addresses will continue to be operational for the foreseeable future, but please take a moment to update your records with our new contact information, which can be found here.
Last, but not least, thank you to our board of directors, staff, focus groups, consultants and supporters, all of whom were instrumental in shaping and strengthening our identity. We couldn’t have done it without you! Your tireless efforts continue to make a world of difference in the fight to end housing discrimination.
– Jim Berry, Executive Director, Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania
