We started working with two healthcare nonprofits in 2012, Kids With Food Allergies and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Our company founder, Sierra Skidmore, has a child with severe food allergies and asthma, so supporting these organizations was a natural fit! We helped both nonprofits write and design their newsletters, annual reports, handouts and more. We also gained valuable experience writing about complicated health topics in plain language.
“When my son was diagnosed with severe food allergies and asthma, I knew I needed to get educated—and fast. I found Kids with Food Allergies and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America to be invaluable resources as a parent struggling to keep my child safe in the face of a daunting diagnosis. From that point forward, I made it my mission to support healthcare organizations so they could help other parents in situations like mine,” says Sierra Skidmore, Penn Creative’s Founder and Creative Director.

In 2017, we got our first opportunity to work with a client in the laboratory animal science field, providing graphic design, writing and marketing strategy to Quakertown, PA-based Animal Specialties and Provisions (ASAP). We continue to work with ASAP daily—doing everything from keeping their website updated, to writing and designing product spotlight emails, to PowerPoint presentations and beyond!
Jenny Strauss, one of Penn Creative’s owners, is exceptionally enthusiastic about this industry. She says, “I am fascinated by the laboratory animal science niche! I met Deb Benner, the President of ASAP, through her mother-in-law. One day, I got around to asking Deb what she did. She said, ‘I sell rat food. What do you do?’ I said, ‘I’m in marketing. I help people do things like figure out how to sell more rat food!’ We were both intrigued and an enduring partnership was born. I now see rodents and other animals as healthcare heroes and have dedicated myself to learning the lab animal science lingo, the industry players, and how to write marketing material for this audience.”
On a weekly basis, we create emails for ASAP—including writing, photo sourcing and graphic design.
Soon after we started working with ASAP, we were hired to write blog posts for Peroxigard, a Canada-based subsidiary of Virox, which manufactures a one-step cleaner disinfectant for life sciences clients. Since then, we’ve added Penn Medicine, Wolters Kluwer Health, IOP Publishing and a start-up genomics company to our client roster.
Most recently, in April 2023, we were retained to design and edit a brochure for
Ultra Labs Philadelphia, a state-of-the-art, eleven-story building with predesigned and engineered infrastructure for cGMP manufacturing facilities, BSL2 labs, and office space.
